Bonnet making - designed and prepared by volunteers

Roses from the heart bonnets
Roses from the heart bonnets
source: Roses from the Heart project by Christina Henri - the artist conceived the cloth bonnet symbol as a signifier of the convict women's worth - their economic value to Australia's prosperity.

Bonnet making instructions  prepared by Parramatta history and heritage volunteers

Originally designed and prepared by volunteers for Women Transported, Life in Australia's Convict Female Factories exhibition, Parramatta Heritage Centre, 2008. An exhibition that sought to reveal stories paying tribute to the memories, experiences and efforts of the many women who found themselves torn away from the lives they knew and thrown into an unfamiliar landscape. These stories were compiled into an epublication accessible through this link.

The following instructions and diagrams showing convict women's bonnet making are presented by volunteers.
